Bayamo was founded in 1513 as one of the first Spanish settlements in Cuba. It is now the capital of Granma Province. The town sits on high ground above the Bayamo River, and its historic centre keeps the compact block pattern of a colonial town, with plazas at its heart. Newer districts extend outward in looser grids toward the flat agricultural land that surrounds it.
The city holds a central place in Cuban national memory. Carlos Manuel de Céspedes, who began the first war of independence in 1868, was born here. La Bayamesa, which became the national anthem, was first sung in Bayamo's streets. In 1869 residents set the town on fire rather than surrender it to Spanish troops.
A Bayamo map poster shows these layers clearly. A tight old core stands on the river bluff, and a ring of later neighbourhoods reaches out toward the plains, with the river bending along one edge. It is a modest city in scale, but the historic streets give it a dense, carefully drawn centre that holds up well at large sizes.
Short, irregular colonial blocks cluster around the central plazas. Many were rebuilt after the fire of 1869, and they still form the densest part of the map.
The river curves along the western edge of the old town, below the higher ground where the first settlement was placed, and gives the city a natural boundary.
Beyond the built-up area, the roads fan out across the flat farmland of the Cauto basin, which leaves generous white space around the town.

Koteā ko Bayamo
For Cubans at home and abroad, Bayamo is the city of the anthem and of Céspedes. A map of its streets is a small patriotic object that doesn't need to announce itself, and it works just as well for travellers who walked the old plazas.
Add a title, a subtitle with a meaningful date, and your own coordinates line, then pick from five styles: Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand. Paper suits the colonial character of the old centre particularly well.
