Te mapa
Holguín is known in Cuba as the city of parks, and the map shows why. The centre is a regular grid of blocks, and at intervals whole blocks are left open as plazas. Parque Calixto García, Parque Céspedes, Parque Peralta and others line up one after another. The result is a rhythm of open squares within a tight colonial street pattern.
North of the centre, the Loma de la Cruz rises above the city. A long stairway of several hundred steps climbs from the grid up to a cross and viewpoint at the top. It is one of the few features that breaks the flat, orderly layout. On a Holguín map poster, the stair and hill form a clear landmark above the parks.
The city is the capital of its eastern province. Further out, the modern districts are less regular: residential blocks, broad avenues and roads leading north towards the coast. Christopher Columbus is believed to have landed on that coast in 1492, near today's Gibara, and the province's beaches are well known.
Several open squares punctuate the central grid, one after another. They give the historic centre a recognisable pattern of evenly spaced open spaces.
A hill north of the centre, reached by a long straight stairway. It stands out as the high point overlooking the whole flat grid.
Straight streets and regular blocks form the old core. The pattern is clean and orderly, and it gradually loosens into the larger modern districts.

Koteā ko Holguín
For people from Holguín the plazas and the stairway to the Loma are everyday landmarks, and a map of them brings home into any room. Travellers who have walked from square to square will recognise the pattern at a glance.
