Te mapa
Great Inagua is the southernmost island of the Bahamas and one of the largest in the country. It is broad rather than long. From above, much of the interior is covered by Lake Windsor, a large shallow body of water, along with salt pans and wetlands. The only real town is Matthew Town in the southwest, with a small street pattern near the coast.
Inagua is known for two things. First is salt: large solar salt works near Matthew Town have been part of the island's economy for a long time. Second is flamingos: Inagua National Park protects one of the largest breeding colonies of West Indian flamingos in the region. Wildlife far outnumbers people here.
An Inagua map poster is dominated by water inside the land as well as around it. The lake and salt pans create large, soft shapes within the coastline, while the town is only a small area in one corner. It is a map of a flat, open landscape shaped by evaporation and wildlife.
A large shallow lake fills much of the island's interior, forming a second outline inside the coast.
Near Matthew Town, geometric evaporation ponds produce straight edges and regular shapes that are unusual on a Caribbean island.
The island's small town in the southwest is the only significant cluster of streets on the map, surrounded by wide open land.

Koteā ko Inagua
Inagua suits birdwatchers, sailors heading to the Windward Passage and people with family ties to the southern Bahamas. Its broad shape with an inland lake looks different from almost any other island in the region.
