Te mapa
Gonâve Island is the largest of Haiti's offshore islands, lying in the wide gulf west of Port-au-Prince. It stretches for roughly sixty kilometres from west-northwest to east-southeast but is only around fifteen kilometres across at its widest, giving it a slender, elongated outline. From above it looks like a long shoal of land set between the two peninsulas that enclose the gulf.
The island is dry limestone upland, with ridges running along its length and a coastline that alternates between steep stretches and small bays. Anse-à-Galets, the main town, sits on the northern coast, and a network of rough roads and tracks links it to villages scattered across the island. Paved roads are scarce, so the map is drawn largely in fine, irregular lines.
Around the island the sea is shallow in places, with reefs and small cays, among them the Arcadins, lying between Gonâve and the mainland coast. A Gonâve Island map poster sets this long shape against the open water of the gulf, a composition that is simple yet unmistakable for anyone who knows Haiti's coastline.
The island's length is roughly four times its width, so it forms a strong horizontal band across the print, well suited to wide formats.
The principal town on the north coast is where the island's road network is densest, and a main landing point for boats from the mainland.
Small cays and reefs lie in the channel between Gonâve and the mainland, adding a scatter of tiny shapes to the eastern side of the map.

Koteā ko Gonâve Island
For members of the Haitian diaspora with roots on La Gonâve, or for people who have worked there, this map is a way to keep the island present. Its clean, elongated form also stands well on its own as a graphic piece.
