Te mapa
Cité Soleil is a commune in the Port-au-Prince metropolitan area, built on low coastal land along the Bay of Port-au-Prince. On the map it appears as one of the densest parts of the capital region: small blocks, narrow passages and very few open spaces, pressed between the water to the west and the main roads leading north out of the city.
The settlement began in the late 1950s as housing for workers, first known as Cité Simone after the wife of François Duvalier, before taking its present name in the 1980s. It grew quickly as people moved from the countryside toward jobs near the port and factories, and it remains one of the most densely populated places in the country.
A Cité Soleil map poster shows how tightly the neighbourhood is woven, with a street pattern that looks almost like textile at small scale. The coastline, the channels that drain toward the bay and the straight lines of the arterial roads frame that texture and give the print its structure.
The commune faces the Bay of Port-au-Prince along a low, irregular coast, where the land meets shallow water with little transition between them.
Small, tightly packed blocks and narrow alleys create one of the most intricate textures in the region, especially striking in a black-and-white rendering.
Main routes running north from central Port-au-Prince edge the commune and connect it to the port, the industrial zones and the rest of the capital.

For people from Cité Soleil and the Haitian diaspora, this map is a way to keep the exact streets of a family home close, wherever they now live. The density of the grid makes a surprisingly graphic print.
