Te mapa
Bāzārak is the administrative centre of Panjshir province, in northeastern Afghanistan. The town lies deep in the Panjshir Valley, a long, narrow valley cut by the Panjshir River through the mountains of the Hindu Kush. From above, the settlement is stretched out along the river and the valley road, with steep, bare slopes rising on either side.
The valley has a strong place in modern Afghan history as the home region of Ahmad Shah Massoud, the commander known as the Lion of Panjshir. His mausoleum stands on a hilltop near Bāzārak and is one of the best-known landmarks in the province.
A Bāzārak map poster is defined by the valley itself. The river, the road and the fields form a narrow corridor, villages cluster wherever the valley floor widens, and the mountains leave almost everything else blank. In black and white, the map reads like a single long gesture, a line of life drawn through stone.
The river runs down the centre of the valley, and nearly every road, field and house on the map lies within a short distance of its banks.
A single main road follows the river through the valley, linking the villages together and forming the backbone of the settlement.
Steep slopes rise on both sides of the valley floor, leaving large empty areas on the map that emphasise how narrow the inhabited land is.

Koteā ko Bāzārak
For people from Panjshir, the valley is closely tied to family, history and identity. A map of Bāzārak and its river is a way to keep that landscape present, wherever life has taken them.
