Te mapa
Belpasso stands on the southern flank of Mount Etna, north-west of Catania. The town has an unusual history. Its predecessor, Malpasso, was overrun by lava in the 1669 eruption, and the rebuilt settlement was then badly damaged in the 1693 earthquake. The present town grew on a new site with a regular street plan.
That rebuilding shows on the map. The centre is organised as a clear grid of straight streets and squares, quite different from the tangled layouts of many older Sicilian towns. Around it, the municipal territory stretches out as a long strip, reaching up toward the volcano and down toward the plain.
A Belpasso map poster pairs that careful grid with the larger presence of Etna. Lava fields, farmland and scattered roads spread out around the town, and in black and white the contrast between planned streets and volcanic ground is especially striking. It is a map shaped by rebuilding.
The historic centre follows a regular plan of straight, crossing streets, laid out after earthquake and lava had destroyed earlier settlements.
The town sits on ground rising toward the volcano, and old lava flows and farmland shape the landscape around the built-up area.
The municipality stretches in a narrow band from the upper slopes of Etna toward the lowlands, which gives the wider map an elongated form.

Koteā ko Belpasso
Belpasso means something to Sicilians who grew up under Etna, to emigrant families keeping a link to the town, and to anyone interested in places shaped by the volcano. The grid tells the story of a community that rebuilt.
