Te mapa
Berestyn is a town in Kharkiv Oblast, southwest of Kharkiv. Until 2024 it was known as Krasnohrad. Its new name comes from the Berestova river, which flows past the town. On a map the town sits in open steppe farmland, and the river valley is the main natural feature for miles around.
The town began in the eighteenth century as a fortress on the Ukrainian Line, a chain of defensive works across the steppe. It later grew into a market and district centre. Today the plan shows a fairly regular street layout on the higher ground, with lower districts along the river and roads leading out across the fields.
A Berestyn map poster captures a steppe town: an orderly street network, the soft curve of the river, and large, open farmland all around it. For many people, the town's new name makes this map feel especially current, a picture of the place as it is called today.
The river that gave the town its new name runs along its edge. It adds a winding line, with meadows and lowland on either side.
The central streets follow a fairly orderly layout, typical of towns that grew from planned settlements on the steppe. The result is a calm, readable grid.
Around the town, broad fields stretch in every direction, crossed by long straight roads. They give the poster a lot of open space.
