Betim lies in the metropolitan area of Belo Horizonte, in the hilly country of Minas Gerais. Its map is not a neat grid. Neighbourhoods follow the uneven terrain, with streets curving around slopes and valleys, while major highways cut straight through and tie the city to the capital and the rest of the state.
Betim's identity is industrial. Fiat opened its car plant here in the 1970s, and the site, now part of Stellantis, remains one of the largest vehicle factories in Latin America. The Gabriel Passos oil refinery is also located in the municipality. On a detailed map, these large industrial sites show as big, regular areas set among the smaller residential blocks.
A Betim map poster shows how industry and landscape meet. The Várzea das Flores reservoir, shared with neighbouring Contagem, adds a branching shape of water to the northern side.
