Te mapa
Sabará is one of the oldest towns in Minas Gerais. It was founded during the gold rush of the late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries, where the Sabará river meets the Rio das Velhas. On a map the rivers trace the valley floor, and the historic centre follows them closely, with narrow streets squeezed between water and hillside.
The terrain is steep, so the street network is far from regular. Lanes climb, fork and wind up the slopes, and newer neighbourhoods spread across the surrounding hills in irregular clusters. Sabará borders Belo Horizonte, and from above the change from the capital's grid to Sabará's irregular street pattern is easy to see.
Sabará is known for its baroque churches, including the small Nossa Senhora do Ó chapel with its Chinese-influenced interior, and for its jabuticaba festival. A Sabará map poster captures a colonial mining town whose layout still reflects the rivers, the hills and the gold that first brought people here.
The Rio das Velhas and the Sabará river meet near the old centre. Their valleys determined where the historic town could grow.
The historic core keeps a tight, irregular weave of streets and small squares around its churches. It is one of the most intricate parts of the poster.
Beyond the centre, neighbourhoods are scattered across steep slopes. Their streets bend with the terrain rather than following any grid.

Koteā ko Sabará
Sabará appeals to anyone who loves colonial Minas Gerais, and to families from the town who now live in Belo Horizonte or further away. The winding streets make a map that rewards close looking.
Personalise the title and subtitle, perhaps with a street name or the year you visited, and keep or change the coordinates. Choose Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand, as a $9 digital download or a printed poster.
