Te mapa
Biak is the largest of the Schouten Islands, lying at the entrance to Cenderawasih Bay off the north coast of Papua in Indonesia. It is built largely of uplifted coral limestone, a landscape of low plateaus, caves and forest. From above the island is broad and irregular, with its narrower neighbour Supiori joined to it in the northwest across a slim channel.
Most of the island's streets are concentrated in the town of Biak, which lies on the southern coast next to a long airport runway. From there roads follow the shoreline east and west, linking villages and beaches, while the forested interior has fewer routes. Offshore, reefs and small islets fringe much of the coast.
Biak was the scene of heavy fighting in 1944 during the Second World War, and caves used by Japanese forces remain a known historical site near the town. A Biak Island map poster shows the town's grid, the runway along the shore, the coastal roads and the limestone interior, all set within a wide expanse of sea.
The town of Biak spreads along the southern shore, with a long straight runway beside it that forms one of the clearest lines on the map.
The island is made mostly of raised coral limestone, with caves and forest across an interior crossed by only a few roads.
The neighbouring island of Supiori lies in the northwest, separated from Biak by a narrow channel, and a wider framing includes both islands.

Koteā ko Biak Island
Biak holds meaning for people from Papua, for families with links to its wartime history and for travellers who have stopped over on the way into the region. A map gives that connection a lasting, understated form.
The title, subtitle and coordinates line can be personalised, perhaps with a family name or a year, and you can choose Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand. Paper keeps the look soft and archival.
