Te mapa
Run, often written Rhun, is one of the smallest of Indonesia's Banda Islands, in the Maluku province. On a map it is a narrow, elongated island only a few kilometres long, with a lone village on its shore and a steep, wooded interior. The surrounding reef and the small islet of Nailaka just offshore complete the picture.
Its outline is modest, but its history is not. In the seventeenth century the Banda Islands were the world's only source of nutmeg, and Run was an English foothold in a region the Dutch wanted for themselves. Under the 1667 Treaty of Breda, England gave up its claim to Run, and the Dutch gave up theirs to New Amsterdam, which became New York.
That exchange is why an island this small still gets mentioned in histories of the spice trade and of Manhattan. A Rhun Island map poster is both a map of a quiet place in the Banda Sea and a reminder of how the modern world was shaped. Nutmeg still grows there.
The island is long and slender, with the sea close on every side. Even at small print sizes it reads as a single clean stroke of land.
A tiny islet lies just off Run's coast, connected by reef shallows. It gives the composition a small companion shape at one end.
The island's settlement sits by the water, the only cluster of paths and houses on an otherwise wooded, steep island.
