Te mapa
Birnin Kebbi is the capital of Kebbi State in northwestern Nigeria. It sits close to the Sokoto River, whose broad floodplain runs past the town and fills with water in the rainy season. From above the contrast is striking. Seasonal wetlands and rice fields cover the low ground, and the town stands on firmer land beside them, its roads spreading across the surrounding savanna.
The name comes from the Hausa word birni, used for a walled or fortified town. The older quarter still has the denser, irregular street pattern of a historic settlement centred on the emir's palace. Around it, government districts laid out after Kebbi State was created in 1991 bring wider, straighter roads. A Birnin Kebbi map poster captures both layers.
The region is agricultural, and the river system supports rice and vegetable farming on the fadama lands near the water. On a black-and-white print, the soft outlines of the floodplain frame the town. They show how closely life here is tied to the river's yearly rise and fall.
A wide, low area of channels, pools and fields runs alongside the town, forming a broad natural band that changes with the seasons.
The older part of town has tighter, winding lanes and small compounds, clearly different in texture from the newer planned districts.
Wider roads and larger plots mark the areas built as the state capital developed, giving the outer town a more open, orderly look.
