Te mapa
Birūr is a town in Chikkamagaluru district, Karnataka, on the Deccan plateau east of the Western Ghats. It is best known as a railway junction, where lines divide, and the tracks shape much of its layout. Long straight rail lines cross the map, and the town's streets form a fairly compact pattern around them.
Around the town, the land is mostly farmland, with coconut and areca groves and fields. Irrigation tanks, the reservoirs typical of this part of southern India, appear as irregular open shapes in the landscape. Roads run out across the plateau toward neighbouring towns, such as Kadur close by.
A Birūr map poster shows a small town whose identity is tied to the railway. The meeting of rail lines gives the composition a strong structure, and the surrounding tanks and fields add softer forms. It suits people from the town, railway families, and anyone who has changed trains at the junction.

The town's streets and blocks are close together around the centre. They form a small, dense area in the middle of the open plateau.
Tanks and reservoirs in the surrounding farmland appear as irregular open shapes. They add softer, organic forms around the straight lines of the railway.
