Borama is the main town of the Awdal region in the northwest, close to the border with Ethiopia. It lies in an upland area with a cooler climate than the coastal plains to the north, and the surrounding land is used for farming and grazing. The town has grown considerably in recent decades as people moved in from the surrounding countryside.
The town is known as an educational centre, home to Amoud University, one of the first universities established in the region after the civil war. On a map the central streets form a relatively dense core, while newer neighbourhoods spread outward across the hilly terrain in a looser pattern.
