Te mapa
Jijiga is the capital of Ethiopia's Somali Region and sits on a high plateau in the east of the country, not far from the border with Somaliland. From above, it lies on open, level ground with few natural obstacles, so the city can spread freely. The older centre is compact, while newer districts extend outward in wider, more regular blocks.
The main roads leave the city in several directions. They link it to Harar and Dire Dawa to the west and to the border towns to the east, and they are the strongest lines on the map. Between them, residential areas fill the space with a fairly even grid. At the edges, the streets thin out into open grassland used for grazing.
A Jijiga map poster shows a city that has grown quickly as a regional capital and a hub for livestock trade. West of the city, the Karamara ridge is remembered as the site of a key battle of the 1977–78 Ogaden War. On the page, the plateau's flat ground gives the city a clear, easy-to-read outline.
Main roads radiate from the centre toward Harar and the eastern border, forming the backbone of the city's layout.
Newer neighbourhoods spread across the plateau in wide, regular blocks and show how quickly the city has grown.
Beyond the built-up area, flat grassland surrounds the city and leaves a clean, wide margin around the streets.
