Te mapa
Burgess Hill grew around the railway. When the London to Brighton line opened in the nineteenth century, a scattered area of commons and brickworks gradually became a town. The map still shows that history. The railway runs north to south through the centre, the town centre sits close to the station, and residential streets spread outward in crescents and closes toward the surrounding fields.
The town lies in Mid Sussex, north of the South Downs. The line of hills fills the southern skyline and makes this a common starting point for walks on the chalk. Much of Burgess Hill was built in the twentieth century, so the street plan mixes older roads with the curving layouts of postwar and later estates. Between them are parks and green corridors.
A Burgess Hill map poster shows the rail line as its main axis, with the neighbourhoods arranged around it. Main roads lead to nearby villages, and the edges of the town break into farmland. It is an honest portrait of a commuter town in southeast England, one where the railway shaped the plan from the start.
The main railway runs straight through the town, and Burgess Hill's growth from the Victorian era onward followed it, so the line remains the clearest axis on the map.
Twentieth-century estates fill much of the town with curving crescents and short closes, a looser texture that contrasts with the straighter older roads near the centre.
Southern streets thin out into fields as the land rises toward the South Downs, giving the poster an open lower edge instead of a hard boundary.
