Maidstone sits in the heart of Kent, where the River Medway curves through a gentle valley. From above, the river forms the spine of the map, with the historic core and High Street on its eastern bank and further neighbourhoods rising on either side. Roads radiate out in all directions, and the M20 crosses the landscape to the north of the town.
As the county town of Kent, Maidstone has long been an administrative centre. A cluster of historic buildings stands by the river, including the Archbishop's Palace, once a residence of the Archbishops of Canterbury. Mote Park, one of the larger town parks in the south east, spreads across the eastern side, and Leeds Castle lies a few miles beyond.
