Burlington lies in Middlesex County, about a dozen miles north-west of Boston. Highways define it on a map. Interstate 95, known locally as Route 128, sweeps across the town, and U.S. Route 3 meets it here, so large interchanges and ramps are some of the most striking shapes in the frame. Between them are the curving streets and cul-de-sacs typical of postwar New England suburbs.
Route 128 became known as a technology corridor in the second half of the twentieth century.
