Te mapa
Burnie is the largest town on the northwest coast of Tasmania, set on Emu Bay and facing Bass Strait. From above, the city follows the shoreline in a long curve. The flat land by the water holds the port and the main commercial streets, while residential areas climb the steep hills behind, with roads winding up the slopes.
The port has long been central to Burnie's identity, shipping timber, minerals and other goods, and the city was known for decades for its paper mill. Today the waterfront has a coastal walkway and beaches, and little penguins come ashore along parts of the coast. Rivers reach the sea on either side of the city.
A Burnie map poster shows a city between hills and sea. The smooth line of the bay, the sharp shapes of the port and the contour-like curves of the upper streets make a strong, balanced composition. In the Blueprint style the sea reads especially well, while Classic black and white brings out the street pattern.
The city curves around the bay, and the long shoreline gives the map a clear natural edge facing Bass Strait.
The harbour's wharves and breakwater form bold geometric shapes that jut into the sea at the heart of the waterfront.
Residential streets wind up the slopes behind the city centre, following the terrain in loops that resemble contour lines.

Koteā ko Burnie
Burnie is home to people across northwest Tasmania, and many who have moved to the mainland keep strong ties to the coast. A map of the city is a considered reminder of the bay, the port and the hills.
