Te mapa
Camocim sits on the northwestern coast of Ceará, where the Coreaú River widens into an estuary before it reaches the Atlantic. From above, the town is a compact grid on a low spit of land. Water frames it on two sides: the river channel curves along one edge, and the long line of the ocean shore runs along the other.
The landscape around the streets is mostly sand, mangrove and shallow water. Dunes run along the coast in both directions, and tidal channels cut into the estuary banks. On paper these become soft, irregular shapes against the straight town blocks, so the built area reads as a small, orderly patch surrounded by moving ground.
Camocim was once the coastal end of a railway line from the interior, and it has long lived from fishing and the sea. It also sits on the route toward Jericoacoara, further along the coast. A Camocim map poster shows a place defined almost entirely by where land stops and water begins.
The river widens as it approaches the sea, and its curving channel and muddy banks make the strongest line on the map, bending around the town's inland edge.
A long, gently curved beach runs along the northern side of town, a clean edge between the street grid and the open, empty ocean on the page.
Beyond the last streets, sand and mangrove take over. Their loose, organic outlines contrast with the regular blocks and give the composition texture.
