Te mapa
Caxias lies in the east of Maranhão, on the Itapecuru River, one of the state's main rivers. From above the river curves along the city. The older streets sit close to its banks, and newer neighbourhoods spread over the higher ground in a grid of longer blocks. Roads lead out toward Teresina, in neighbouring Piauí, and into the Maranhão interior.
The city mattered a great deal in the nineteenth century. It was an important commercial centre during the cotton era and a key setting in the Balaiada, a popular revolt in Maranhão in the late 1830s and early 1840s. Caxias is also the birthplace of Gonçalves Dias, one of the best-known poets of Brazilian Romanticism.
A Caxias map poster shows a city shaped by its river and its routes. The Itapecuru draws a soft line across the frame, the historic centre gathers beside it in shorter, tighter streets, and the newer districts extend outward in a looser, more regular pattern. It is a clear portrait of a regional city with a long place in Maranhão's story.
The river bends past the city on its long route north toward the Atlantic. It is the map's main natural line and the edge of the oldest neighbourhoods.
Near the river, older streets form a compact, slightly irregular pattern that marks where the nineteenth-century commercial town first grew.
Newer districts spread over the higher ground in a broader grid of long blocks, giving the poster an even texture around the older core.
