Teresina was founded in 1852 as a planned capital for Piauí, replacing the older inland seat of Oeiras, and was named after Empress Teresa Cristina. It was one of the first planned state capitals in Brazil, and its central streets still follow the straight grid set out at the time. It is also the only state capital in Brazil's northeast that does not lie on the coast.
The city sits between two rivers. The Parnaíba runs along its western edge and forms the border with Maranhão, with the town of Timon on the far bank. The Poti crosses the eastern districts, and the two rivers meet north of the centre at a spot known as the Encontro dos Rios, where a park now marks the confluence.
Teresina is known for its heat and for the trees along its streets, which earned it the nickname Cidade Verde, the green city. A Teresina map poster shows the regular grid of the centre held between two winding rivers, with bridges crossing both and newer districts spreading east beyond the Poti.
The historic centre follows the straight streets of the 1852 plan, in a crisp, regular pattern. It reads clearly on the poster against the curves of the rivers on either side.
North of the centre, the Parnaíba and the Poti join. The confluence forms a clear Y-shape on the map, with a park at the point where the waters meet.
The wide river along the western edge separates Piauí from Maranhão. Bridges cross it to Timon, and its long curving course frames the whole left side of the city.

Koteā ko Teresina
Teresina's shape, a planned city between two rivers, is easy to recognise and rewarding to hang. It suits anyone who grew up in Piauí or studied in the capital, and makes a quiet reminder of the city's green streets.
Personalise the title and subtitle, perhaps with a neighbourhood or a date, and adjust the coordinates line. Choose one of five styles, with Blueprint or Noir bringing out the rivers. HD files are $9, and printed posters come on matte paper, framed or unframed.
