Cândido Sales is a municipality in the south-west of Bahia, close to the state line with Minas Gerais. The town itself is compact, and on a map its streets form a small, fairly dense core, with a few longer roads running out into a wide rural area of farms, pasture and scattered settlements. Beyond the edge of town the map becomes spare and open.
Like much of this part of Bahia, the municipality lives largely from agriculture and livestock, and its links run toward larger regional centres, above all Vitória da Conquista, the nearest big city. It is a place most outsiders pass through rather than visit, which makes it all the more personal for the people who come from here.
