Te mapa
Canning Town lies in the London Borough of Newham, just where the River Lea, known here as Bow Creek, makes its last tight loops before it meets the Thames. On a map the area is hemmed in on every side: the curling creek to the west, the long rectangle of the Royal Victoria Dock to the south, and major roads and rail lines cutting through.
The district grew in the nineteenth century to house workers for the docks and the industries around them. Those docks now hold apartments, exhibition halls and open water instead of cargo ships, but their straight, engineered edges are still the strongest shapes on the map. The Jubilee line and the DLR meet at Canning Town station.
A Canning Town map poster captures a very different London from the old centre. Tight terraces and newer blocks sit between wide transport corridors and hard-edged docks, and the winding creek adds one natural curve to the geometry. It's an honest picture of an area that keeps being rebuilt.
The River Lea twists through a series of tight meanders before joining the Thames, making the most organic line in an otherwise engineered landscape.
South of the district, the long, straight-edged dock shows on the map as a clean rectangle of water, a reminder of the area's working past.
Major roads and rail lines, including the DLR and Jubilee line, cut through the streets in broad bands and divide the neighbourhood into distinct pieces.
