From above, Cartagena reads as a city built between water and water. The Caribbean presses against its western edge, the Bay of Cartagena opens to the south, and the wide Ciénaga de la Virgen lagoon lies to the north-east. Between them, streets and channels squeeze onto sandbars and low ground, so the land looks fragmented, joined by bridges and causeways.
At the centre is the walled city, a compact knot of irregular colonial streets ringed by stone ramparts that show clearly as a closed outline on the map. Getsemaní extends beside it, and the Bocagrande peninsula runs south as a narrow finger of regular blocks. The walled city and its fortifications have been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1984.
A Cartagena map poster keeps all of this in black line and white space: the fortified loop, the curving shore, the lagoons that divide one district from the next. Without colour, the defensive logic of the old port becomes easy to see, and the way the modern city had to spread around water rather than across it.

A thin strip of land running south between open sea and the inner bay, filled with a tight grid of blocks that looks almost ruled onto the sand.
A broad coastal lagoon to the north-east of the centre, a large calm shape of empty space that sets the edge of the neighbourhoods around it.

Koteā ko Cartagena
People hang Cartagena for the walls, for a wedding on the old squares, or for a stay in Getsemaní that stretched longer than planned. The fortified outline is instantly recognisable, and the surrounding water makes a composition that works well at any size.
