Te mapa
Valledupar lies in a broad valley in northeastern Colombia, between the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta and the Serranía del Perijá. On a map its streets form a regular grid on flat ground, while the Guatapurí River comes down from the mountains and curves along the edge of the city before continuing across the plain.
The city is best known as the home of vallenato, the accordion-led music of Colombia's Caribbean region. Every year the Festival de la Leyenda Vallenata brings musicians and listeners to the city, a tradition that began around Plaza Alfonso López and now fills larger open-air venues as well.
Founded in 1550, Valledupar is the capital of Cesar department. The Guatapurí is a favourite place for a swim, and Balneario Hurtado on its banks is a well-known local spot. A Valledupar map poster shows the orderly city plan meeting the natural line of the river, with the mountains close by.
The river curves along the edge of the city after descending from the Sierra Nevada, adding a clear, flowing line beside the regular street grid.
The historic main square at the heart of the old centre, where the street pattern converges and the city's festival tradition began.
The city extends across open, level land between two mountain ranges, so its grid spreads evenly until it thins out into farmland and the river's edge.
