Cascavel lies in the state of Ceará in north-eastern Brazil, southeast of Fortaleza, on the low plain that runs back from the Atlantic. The municipality has two different faces: a compact town set some way inland, and a stretch of shoreline with beach communities facing the ocean. Its name is the Portuguese word for rattlesnake.
From above, the town centre shows a fairly regular pattern of blocks around its older core, with main roads coming in from the surrounding countryside and newer neighbourhoods filling the edges. The land is mostly flat, so the streets keep to straight lines and the town grows outward in patches rather than following the contours of hills.
Towards the coast, the pattern changes. Streets thin out, the settlements string themselves along the shore, and the clean curve of the Atlantic becomes the strongest line on the page.
