Te mapa
Cebu City sits on the east coast of Cebu Island, on a strip of lowland between the sea and a spine of mountains. The mountains rise steeply behind the city, so from above the dense streets fill a narrow coastal band. Roads climb into the uplands in winding lines, and the coast is reshaped by ports and reclaimed land.
In 1521 Ferdinand Magellan's expedition planted a cross here, and Magellan's Cross is kept in a small chapel beside the Basilica del Santo Niño. The Spanish settlement founded in 1565 made Cebu the oldest city in the Philippines. Fort San Pedro still stands by the waterfront, and Colon Street is regarded as the oldest street in the country.
Across the Mactan Channel lies Mactan Island, home to the international airport and linked to the mainland by bridges. A Cebu City map poster shows the old port core, newer business districts, reclaimed shore and the dark mass of hills behind, all in a single frame.

A narrow strait separates Cebu from Mactan Island. The bridges across it are the main links to the airport and resorts.
Steep hills rise behind the city, and roads wind up into them. On the map, dense streets give way to sparse, curving lines.
