Te mapa
Leyte lies in the Eastern Visayas of the Philippines. On the map it is a long island running north to south, with mountains down its centre and plains along the northern and eastern coasts. A narrower southern section splits into two peninsulas around Sogod Bay. The main highways follow the coast and climb across the island's middle.
Tacloban, the largest city, is at the north-eastern corner, where San Juanico Strait separates Leyte from Samar. The San Juanico Bridge crosses this narrow, island-studded channel and is one of the longest bridges in the country. Along the eastern shore, Leyte Gulf opens into the Philippine Sea.
A Leyte map poster covers a landscape tied to major events. In October 1944 Allied forces landed near Palo, and the Battle of Leyte Gulf followed, one of the largest naval battles in history. In November 2013 Typhoon Haiyan, known locally as Yolanda, struck Tacloban and the eastern coast with great force.

A long, fairly straight eastern coast opening onto the gulf. Palo and other towns line up along it, connected by the coastal road.
A deep bay in the south that splits the island into two peninsulas, giving Leyte its forked southern end.

Koteā ko Leyte
Leyte is home for many families and a place of memory for others, whether of the 1944 landings or the rebuilding after 2013. The long island and its narrow strait make a strong, balanced composition.
