Te mapa
Samar is the third-largest island in the Philippines, part of the Eastern Visayas region. Its eastern shore faces the Pacific directly, while the west looks onto the Samar Sea and the smaller islands of the Visayas. To the southwest it lies just across a narrow strait from Leyte, and the two islands are joined by the San Juanico Bridge, one of the longest bridges in the country.
Most towns and roads follow the coasts, as the interior is hilly and heavily forested. Much of that interior is protected as the Samar Island Natural Park, which covers one of the largest remaining lowland rainforests in the Philippines, with rivers, caves and limestone formations. Cities such as Catbalogan and Calbayog sit on the western coast, and Borongan on the eastern side.
A Samar Island map poster captures this contrast between busy edges and a quiet centre. Coastal roads trace the island's outline, rivers cut inland toward the forest, and the southeast tip reaches out towards Guiuan, which faced the full force of Typhoon Haiyan in 2013. The shape is broad and ragged, full of bays and small offshore islands.
The bridge crosses the narrow San Juanico Strait to Leyte in a long curve, visible on the map as a thin line joining two large islands.
The centre of the island has few roads. Rivers wind through it instead, leaving large calm areas that contrast with the settled coastline.
Bays, inlets and small offshore islands break up the coast on every side, giving the island a complex, irregular outline.

Koteā ko Samar Island
For people from Samar, living in Manila or abroad, this map is a way of keeping the home island close. It also suits travellers who crossed the San Juanico Bridge or explored the caves and rivers of the interior.
Add a hometown, a family name or a date to the title and subtitle, adjust the coordinates line, and choose from Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint and Sand. Blueprint shows the many bays and rivers especially clearly.
