Cervia is on the Adriatic coast of Emilia-Romagna, south of Ravenna. For centuries it was defined by salt, and the Saline di Cervia salt pans still lie just inland. The present town centre was built in the eighteenth century, when the old town was moved closer to the sea, so it has an unusually regular plan.
The map shows this clearly. The historic centre is a compact square with a regular grid of streets. A canal links the salt pans to the harbour and the sea. To the north, Milano Marittima was laid out as a garden city among the pine trees, with a softer, more curved street pattern.
