Rimini lies on the Adriatic coast of Emilia-Romagna, and from above it divides neatly in two. Inland is the historic centre, a compact grid inherited from the Roman colony of Ariminum, bounded by the old course of the Marecchia River. Toward the sea, the Marina district stretches along the shore in a long band of hotels, streets and beach establishments running parallel to the sand.
Two Roman monuments mark the ends of the old town. The Arch of Augustus stands where the Via Flaminia from Rome entered the city, and the Bridge of Tiberius, completed in the first century AD, still carries traffic over the old riverbed toward the Via Emilia. The Tempio Malatestiano, reworked by Leon Battista Alberti, stands in the centre, and Federico Fellini was born here in 1920.
A Rimini map poster shows how the city has grown from its Roman core toward the coast, with the river park curving between them and the beach drawing an almost perfectly straight edge. It suits anyone who spent summers on this shore, or who knows the piazzas of the old centre as well as the seafront.
The Roman bridge crosses the former bed of the Marecchia at the northern edge of the old town, where the river was later diverted and its old channel turned into a long park.
The historic centre keeps the orthogonal layout of Ariminum, and the main street between the Arch of Augustus and the bridge follows the line of the ancient road through the colony.
The Marina runs along the Adriatic in a long, straight line of promenades, hotels and rows of beach concessions, with the harbour canal reaching the sea between the beaches.
