Te mapa
Cessnock sits in the lower Hunter region of New South Wales, inland from Newcastle. It grew as a coal-mining town in the early twentieth century, when the South Maitland coalfields drew workers into the district. The straight streets and modest blocks still reflect that practical origin. Today the town is better known as the gateway to one of Australia's oldest wine regions.
North of town lie the vineyards of Pokolbin and the wider Hunter Valley wine country, and much of Cessnock's recent identity comes from them. A Cessnock map poster shows the contrast clearly. A compact grid centres on the main commercial streets, and the suburbs spread along roads leading out toward cellar doors, farmland and the low hills beyond.
To the south, bushland and the Watagan Mountains rise toward the horizon, and the street network thins out quickly. Former mining villages dot the surrounding area, linked by winding roads. At wider scales these fragments form a scattered constellation around the main town. It is the outline of a coalfield that once supported many small communities.
A regular pattern of streets marks the older core. It was laid out during the coal-mining era and is still the clearest, densest part of the map.
Routes heading north toward Pokolbin link the town to the Hunter Valley wine country and draw long lines across open, lightly built land.
Small settlements around Cessnock, many founded near former collieries, appear as separate clusters of streets connected by winding country roads.

Koteā ko Cessnock
Cessnock means different things to different people: a mining family's hometown, a base for weekends in the vineyards, a place to settle within reach of Newcastle and Sydney. Its map shows the town and its surroundings without choosing between those stories.
