Te mapa
Chambéry lies in a narrow corridor between mountains. The Bauges rise to the northeast and the Chartreuse to the south, so the town stretches along the valley floor. On a map the built area is long and thin. Roads, railway and river all share the flat ground, and the contour-free spaces at the edges show where the slopes begin.
The historic centre is small and dense. The Château des Ducs de Savoie holds its southwest corner, and from there the medieval streets run in short, twisting lines. The straight arcaded Rue de Boigne leads to the Fontaine des Éléphants. The Leysse passes through town, partly covered in the centre, and then flows north toward the Lac du Bourget.
A Chambéry map poster records a former capital of the House of Savoy, which ruled from this castle before the court moved to Turin. The town is now the capital of the Savoie department. Just outside it is Les Charmettes, where Jean-Jacques Rousseau lived for a time. Drawn in line, the valley and its layers of history fit neatly into one frame.
The castle complex forms a solid block at the edge of the old town. It anchors the centre and marks where the Savoy court once held power.
A straight arcaded street cuts through the curving medieval lanes and ends at the elephant fountain. It is one of the few truly straight lines in the old centre.
The river follows the valley north toward the Lac du Bourget. Roads and railway run beside it, and together they give the map its long axis.
