Chaohu stands at the eastern end of Chao Lake in Anhui province, one of the five largest freshwater lakes in China. Once a prefecture-level city, it is now a county-level city administered by Hefei. The urban area wraps around the lakeshore and the river through which the lake drains toward the Yangtze, and water dominates the western side of any map of it.
From above, the contrast is striking: a broad, empty expanse of lake to one side, a dense city on the other, and a river running out between them. Low hills appear around the edges of the urban area, and newer districts have spread along the lakefront, with embankments and waterside roads tracing the shore.
