Te mapa
Tongling occupies a stretch of the Yangtze's southern bank in Anhui, and the river dominates any map of the area: broad, split by sandbars and islands, and crossed by long bridges. The city itself sits a little back from the water, its central districts laid out on a mostly regular grid of wide avenues, with hills rising around the edges and lakes scattered between the built-up areas.
The name means roughly copper hill, and copper defines the place. Mining and smelting here go back thousands of years, and in modern China Tongling became one of the country's key copper-producing centres. That history shows in the landscape as well as the economy, with industrial areas and former mining sites forming distinct patches on the map around the residential core.
A Tongling map poster brings the two main forces of the place into one frame: the great river sweeping past to the northwest, and the planned modern city spreading between hills and water. Printed in clean black and white, the Yangtze becomes a bold graphic band, while the street pattern shows a city built for industry that has grown into a regional centre.
The river runs broad and slow past the city, split by sandbars and islands. It gives the map a heavy, flowing edge and is crossed here by long road and rail bridges.
Low hills around the centre hold the mines that gave Tongling its name, appearing on the map as irregular gaps and winding roads set among the grid.
The central districts follow a broad, regular layout of wide avenues and large blocks, typical of Chinese cities that expanded rapidly in the late twentieth century.

Koteā ko Tongling
For people from Tongling, the map carries the river and the hills they grew up between, and for those who worked in the region's copper industry it records a very particular place. It also appeals to anyone drawn to the graphic power of the Yangtze on paper.
