Te mapa
Chiang Rai lies in Thailand's far north, on the Kok River, which runs along the northern side of the city on its way to the Mekong. King Mengrai founded the city in 1262, before later moving his capital south to Chiang Mai. On a map the centre is a compact grid of streets, with a gilded clock tower at a central roundabout.
Temples are spread across the old town, among them Wat Phra Kaew, where according to tradition the Emerald Buddha was discovered in 1434. South of the city, near the highway toward Chiang Mai, stands Wat Rong Khun, the White Temple, created by the artist Chalermchai Kositpipat. To the north, the roads lead toward the Golden Triangle, where Thailand, Laos and Myanmar meet.
A Chiang Rai map poster combines the river's broad meanders and islands with the neat centre and the looser pattern of the outer neighbourhoods. It is a fitting keepsake for travellers who used the city as a base for exploring the north, and for anyone who has lived among its temples, markets and hills.
The river winds along the city's northern edge, with sandbars and islands in its channel. It is the most fluid shape on the map and frames the centre from above.
The old town's streets meet at a central roundabout with the clock tower. The compact grid around it contrasts with the spreading suburbs further out.
The highway south toward Chiang Mai passes Wat Rong Khun. On a wider map it is a long line leaving the city through farmland.

Koteā ko Chiang Rai
For long-term residents and returning travellers alike, Chiang Rai is often the part of Thailand that stays with them the longest. A map of the city and river is a restrained souvenir that sits comfortably in a living room or study.
