Te mapa
Chillán stands on the flat floor of Chile's Central Valley, with the Andes rising to the east. Earthquakes have reshaped the city again and again, and it has been moved and rebuilt more than once since its founding in the sixteenth century. What stands out most clearly from above is its orderly Spanish grid, laid out in square blocks around a central plaza.
The historic core is framed by four long avenues that together form a large square, a boundary that still reads clearly on any map. The earthquake of 1939 destroyed much of the city, and the reconstruction brought modern buildings, including a cathedral designed to withstand future tremors. Since 2018 Chillán has been the capital of the Ñuble Region.
A Chillán map poster makes that geometry the main event: a dense checkerboard held within its four avenues, with newer neighbourhoods spilling outward in less regular patterns. Next door lies Chillán Viejo, birthplace of Bernardo O'Higgins, whose streets join the city's southwestern edge. In monochrome, the discipline of the plan is striking.
Avenues Brasil, Argentina, Ecuador and Collín enclose the historic centre, drawing a bold square outline that frames the densest part of the grid.
The main square sits at the heart of the grid, with the modern concrete cathedral facing it, a reminder of how the city rebuilt itself after the 1939 earthquake.
The neighbouring town of Chillán Viejo, the city's earlier site, adjoins to the southwest, so two street patterns meet where the old and new foundations touch.

Koteā ko Chillán
Chillán is a city many Chileans pass through or return to, known for its market, its farming hinterland and its resilience after repeated earthquakes. A print of its grid is a calm tribute to a place that keeps rebuilding in the same careful pattern.
