Te mapa
Chios is the main town of the island of the same name in the northeastern Aegean. It sits on the east coast, facing Turkey's Çeşme peninsula across a narrow strait. On a map the harbour is its centre of gravity: a rounded basin enclosed by breakwaters, with the waterfront curving around it and streets rising behind toward the hills.
At the northern end of the harbour stands the Kastro, a fortified medieval quarter whose walls enclose a small maze of lanes that shows clearly in the street pattern. South of the town lies Kampos, an area of stone-walled estates and citrus orchards. Its long walled lanes form a rectilinear pattern quite unlike the dense town centre.
The island is famous for mastic, the aromatic resin produced in the villages of southern Chios, and has long been home to seafaring and shipowning families. A Chios map poster brings together harbour, fortress and orchards, the main elements of a town that has looked out to sea and toward the nearby Anatolian shore for centuries.
The enclosed harbour forms a clear, rounded shape at the heart of the town. The waterfront road traces its edge, and ferries dock along the quays.
Inside its fortifications, the walled medieval quarter north of the harbour keeps a tight, irregular network of lanes. It stands out at once as a small historic enclave.
South of town, walled lanes run between citrus orchards and old mansions. Their long, straight pattern contrasts with the organic streets of the centre.

Koteā ko Chios
Chios draws people back through family roots, summers on the island or ties to its maritime history. A map of the town holds the harbour, the Kastro and Kampos in a single calm image.
