Te mapa
Chiriguaná lies in the centre of Cesar Department in northern Colombia, on the wide, low plains between the Serranía del Perijá and the Magdalena River. The land is almost perfectly flat. On a map the town appears as a neat cluster of blocks set in open pasture, with streams and marshy ground drawing loose shapes around it.
Like many towns in Colombia's Caribbean interior, Chiriguaná is built around a central square and a grid of streets that loosens at the edges into low houses and yards. A railway line crosses the municipality. The local economy has long been tied to cattle ranching and, more recently, to the coal mining region of central Cesar.
This is a place defined by space and heat rather than by famous monuments, and its map shows it honestly. A Chiriguaná map poster shows the grid, the roads to neighbouring municipalities and the watery lowlands around them. It is a clean portrait for anyone whose family story passes through this part of Colombia.
The town is built around a main square, with a regular grid of streets extending outward and loosening into larger plots toward the edges.
A rail line crosses the flat country near the town, drawn as a long straight line through the pasture that links the region to the Caribbean coast.
Streams, ponds and seasonally flooded ground surround the town. They add irregular, natural shapes to the map and capture the character of the Cesar lowlands.
