Chitembo lies in the south of Bié province, on the broad central plateau that forms the high heart of Angola. The map shows a modest settlement where a few main roads meet, surrounded by long stretches of open land. The built-up blocks thin out quickly into scattered homesteads, tracks and patches of farmland that follow the gentle rise and fall of the upland.
The Bié plateau is known as the area where several of Angola's major rivers begin, flowing in different directions toward the Atlantic and the interior. Around Chitembo this gives the land a pattern of shallow valleys and streams. They are faint on the ground but clear on a map, where they show as fine lines weaving between the roads.
