Chongkan is a town in the western part of Chongqing Municipality, near the border with Sichuan Province. The landscape here belongs to the Sichuan Basin: an endless series of low, rounded hills separated by narrow valleys, almost all of it farmed. On a map, the town appears as a compact cluster of streets set in the folds of this terrain.
The street pattern follows the ground rather than a grid. Main roads run along the valleys, and shorter lanes climb the slopes. Around the town, terraced fields, ponds and small reservoirs create a finely detailed texture, and rapeseed and rice are grown widely throughout the region.
