Te mapa
Christmas Island is an Australian external territory in the Indian Ocean, much closer to Java than to the Australian mainland. It is the summit of an old volcano capped with limestone, rising from the sea in steep cliffs and terraces to a central plateau. On a map the island is compact and irregular, with only a few breaks in its rocky shoreline where settlement is possible.
Most residents live in the north, around Flying Fish Cove and the settlements on the slopes above it, where a small network of roads climbs from the shore to the plateau. Tracks built for phosphate mining extend inland, but much of the island is protected as a national park and appears on a Christmas Island map poster as open ground ringed by coast.
The island is best known for its red crabs. Each year, with the start of the wet season, tens of millions of them migrate from the forest to the coast to breed, crossing roads that are closed for the purpose. Phosphate mining has shaped the local economy since around 1900 and remains visible in the pattern of inland roads.
The island's main anchorage and oldest settlement sits on the north coast, one of the few places where the cliffs give way to a small beach and a jetty.
Limestone terraces step up from the sea around most of the island, so the coastline on the poster is clean and steep, with roads kept back from the edge.
Straight and branching roads run inland across the plateau, many of them built for phosphate extraction. They give the otherwise quiet interior a faint, linear structure.

Koteā ko Christmas Island
Christmas Island draws naturalists, divers and people who lived or worked there, often for only a few years. A map of the whole island is a compact way to remember a place that very few people ever see, and its outline holds well at every size.
Edit the title and add a subtitle with the year of your stay or the migration you watched, then adjust the coordinates line. Choose among five styles, from Classic black & white to Sand. The $9 download covers six sizes as PNG and PDF, with no watermark.
