Çine lies in the valley of the Çine river, south of Aydın in western Turkey. The river, known in antiquity as the Marsyas, flows north towards the Büyük Menderes, and the town stretches along its banks, hemmed in by hills. From above, the map is long and narrow, with streets packed along the valley floor and roads climbing into the slopes.
The area was part of ancient Caria, and the ruins of Alabanda lie a short distance to the west of the town. Upstream, a dam on the river has created a large reservoir. The valley is agricultural, and olive groves and fields cover much of the surrounding land.
