Te mapa
Coalville grew up in the nineteenth century around coal mines in north-west Leicestershire, and its name comes directly from that industry. On a map the town still shows its industrial origins. Rows of terraced streets lie close to the railway line, and a compact centre forms around the clock tower war memorial where several main roads converge.
The collieries have closed, and the former Snibston mining site has become a country park. Coalville also lies within the National Forest, a long-running project to replant woodland across this part of the Midlands, and new plantations and green spaces now surround much of the town. The rocky high ground of Charnwood Forest rises to the east.
A Coalville map poster records a town that has reshaped itself without losing its layout. The Victorian terraces, the old rail route, the later estates and the green spaces on former industrial land all appear side by side. The result is a quietly detailed drawing that reflects the town's working past and its greener present.
Several main roads meet at the town's war memorial clock tower. It gives the centre a clear focal point where the streets draw together.
The rail line that once served the collieries still cuts through the town. It forms a long, straight division across the street pattern.
The old Snibston site is now parkland. It shows up as an open area within the town, marking where industry once dominated.
