West Bromwich lies in the Black Country, north-west of Birmingham, and its map carries the marks of an industrial past. Tightly packed terraced streets, canals and railway lines fill the town, and a long High Street runs through the centre. The M5 motorway passes along the western side. Around the core, interwar and post-war housing spreads outward in layers.
To the east the pattern changes completely. Sandwell Valley, a large country park along the River Tame, opens a broad area of fields, lakes and woodland on the edge of the conurbation. Close by stands The Hawthorns, home of West Bromwich Albion since 1900. The club was one of the founding members of the Football League.
