Telford was designated a new town in the 1960s. It joined a string of older Shropshire mining and ironworking communities, and it was named after the engineer Thomas Telford. From above, its planned structure is obvious. Wide distributor roads loop between neighbourhoods, and a roundabout marks almost every junction. The shopping centre and Town Park sit at the middle.
The older settlements are still visible as tighter, more irregular street patterns inside the planned framework. To the south, the River Severn runs through the Ironbridge Gorge, a UNESCO World Heritage Site regarded as a birthplace of the Industrial Revolution. The world's first cast-iron bridge crosses the river there.
