Constitución lies on the coast of central Chile, where the Maule River meets the Pacific Ocean. Founded in the late eighteenth century as a port for the region, it was laid out as a regular grid, and on the map that grid still fills the flat land beside the river, with coastal hills rising close behind it.
The river mouth is the strongest shape on the poster: a broad band of water opening into the sea. Along the coast to the south, the shore is known for large rock formations, including the Piedra de la Iglesia. The town has also shown its resilience, after much of it was damaged by the earthquake and tsunami of February 2010 and then rebuilt.
