Te mapa
Cotabato City sits near the mouth of the Rio Grande de Mindanao, the island's largest river system. From above, water defines the place. The river winds through the city, dividing into channels and creeks as it approaches Illana Bay on the Moro Gulf. Neighbourhoods fill the land between these waterways, and low, marshy ground surrounds the urban area.
The city is the seat of the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao. A small rise known as PC Hill overlooks the centre and is one of the few high points in the flat delta. On the southern outskirts, the Grand Mosque with its golden domes stands near the water and is one of the largest mosques in the Philippines.
A Cotabato map poster makes the river the main subject. The curves of the channels, the bridges that cross them and the coastal inlets form a composition that is more fluid than a typical street grid. Printed in black and white, the delta reads almost like a drawing, with the city lying on the lower reaches of the great river.
The broad river winds through the city in wide bends, splitting into branches before it reaches the gulf. It shapes the whole map.
A modest hill in the city centre, rising above the flat delta. It is a historic landmark and a lookout over the rivers.
The coast to the west, where river mouths, mangroves and inlets create a complex and irregular edge.
